This study is to explore Louis Brandeis’ American zionism, his anti-assimilationism, and his argument for the ‘ethnic’ identity of the American Jews. In addition, this study is also to understand his contribution to the birth of plural America. Brandeis is a well known public figure as a progressive critic, the first Jewish U.S. Supreme court justice, and an adviser to President Wilson in the progressive era. But Brandeis as a Zionist is not well known. He, born, raised, and lived as a secular Jew, not associating with anything Jewish, became a Zionist in his late 50s, and became a leader of the Zionist movement in America.
His Zionism was deeply related with the American ideals of freedom and equality. To him, Zionism was the expression of the spirit and identity of the American Jews and a means to preserve and revitalize the Jewish identity and solidarity. His zionism was also to realize and extend the American ideals and his progressive democratic ideals and to make America more democratic. In short, Brandeis americanized Zionism and created a space for acknowledging a sub-national identity.
