국문 초록

평생교육학계 일각에서 평생교육의 개념적 혼란을 극복하고 학문적 정체성을 확립하기 위해 ‘사회교육’의 개념을 재고찰해야 한다는 논의가 제기되고 있다. 사회교육학이 정체성을 확립하기 위해서는 사회교육 개념이 ‘학교교육 이외의 교육’이라는 영역 중심이 아닌 ‘교육과 사회와의 관계’라고 하는 고유하고 독자적인 관점으로 논의되어야 할 필요성이 제기된다. 이러한 사회교육 재개념화의 가능성을 탐색하기 위해 국내외에서 사회교육을 교육과 사회와의 관계에서 다룬 논의들과 역사적 흐름들을 살펴보았다. 한국에서의 사회교육 개념 탐색의 과정에서 제기된 ‘교육원형으 로서의 사회교육’ 이론과 ‘사회변화를 위한 비판적 관여로서의 사회교육’ 이론은 사회교육의 개념을 교육과 사회와의 관계에서 다룬 면에서는 의의가 있지만 사회교육학만의 고유한 정체성을 확립하는 데는 한계가 있었다. 한편 유럽의 social pedagogy, 일본의 社會敎育, 미국의 social education 분야에서 사회교육을 교육의 사회적 기능을 중심으로 다루어온 지적 전통들은 고유한 사회교육학의 정립을 위해 시사하는 바가 컸다. 이러한 논의를 통해 본 논문은 사회교육을 사회 속에서, 사회를 통해 이루어지는, 사회를 위한 교육으로 재개념화 하고 사회교육학의 발전을 위한 연구과제를 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The term social education is also used in modern society where the term lifelong education floods. In the discussion on the identity of lifelong education at the academic level, social education is being re-examined. Discussions on social education are still useful to overcome the identity confusion of lifelong education. And for fruitful discussion, the fundamental academic concept that reflects the unique and independent viewpoints and functions of social education should be established. In this study, we explored the possibility of re-conceptualization of social education by examining the international trends of the concept of social education and the footprints of Korean social education research. To be specific, we examined ‘social education as a prototype of education’ which was set up in the process of pursuing the essence of social education, and ‘socio-educational stance’ as a critical involvement for social change in Korea. We also examined Social Pedagogy in Europe, Shakai Kyouiku in Japan, and Social Education in the United States to understand the international trends of concepts in social education. Summing up this study, we tried to re-conceptualize social function-oriented social education by deriving the ubiquitous characteristics of social education, i.e. ‘education for the society, through the society, and in the society’.
