The functions of saliva are lubrication, protection, cleaning, pH regulation, antibacterial effect, etc.
One of the most important function is the healing activity, salivary gland hypofunction, decreased salivation, or alteration of salivary component results in delayed healing.
This experiment evaluates the healing process of the extraction sockets in submandibular glandectomized rats.
After submandibular glandectomy and extraction of the anterior incisor microscopic observations were made at 3 days, 1, 2, 4, 6 weeks after surgery.
The results were as follows:
1. Irregular trabecular pattern could be seen 2 weeks after surgery, and partial calcification was observed 6 weeks after surgery.
2. More severe Inflammatory cell infiltrations were observed in the experimental group 3 days after surgery, but they disappeared as the same pattern as in the control group.
3. The remained granulation tissue were observed in the experimental group 4 weeks after surgery, and the total amount of the connective tissue were smaller than control group.
4. Osteoid tissue was observed from 1 week after surgery, and they disappeared 4 weeks after surgery.
