Many areas of the nation now have local or regional environmental problems due to excessive applications of chemical fertilizers and livestock manures to cropland. Understanding nutrient flow in regional or national level is very important step for the appropriate use of nutrient resources or decision making on nutrient use. The objectives of this study were to systematize the regional-based nutrient balance model in the regional agricultural ecosystem. The model is used to estimate environmental burden in Chungju area at Chungbuk province. In order to estimate the nutrient status in Chungju, this study establishes a nutrient balance between the inputted quantity and the output quantity of the major nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. For the calculation of nutrient balance, nutrient input was calculated by chemical fertilizer consumption and cattle manure input etc., and nutrient output was calculated by farm products and gaseous losses. Major findings of the study present regionally based nutrients balance situation in the specific sites. Annual environmental loads of nitrogen and phosphorus in Chungju area in 2005 were estimated at 19.1kg/10a and 8.9kg/10a, respectively. Application of nutrient balance in agricultural area could be provided a good tool for identifying the nutrient use problems as well as an agricultural indicator.
