As the number of care hospitals increasing and the competition thereof becoming severe, so many care hospitals have been closing their business. Under such a circumstance, selecting a proper location is crucial to the stable operation of care hospitals. In selecting locations, it has been increasingly important to consider the space distribution between demand and supply along with he accessibility of the demanders of the medical services.
Agains this backdrop, this study analyzes the location selecting factors by using the kernel density function analysis and the LISA analysis based on GIS. We examined whether existing care hospitals provide the medical and care services sufficiently to the level which meets the demand in the local community, aiming at revealing the factors influencing the supply and demand of care hospitals.
First, even if the population over 65 years who are the main demand group for care hospitals increases rapidly, the supply of care hospitals may increase even more rapidly. Thus we examine whether oversupply phenomena are observed in some areas. Because the supply of care hospitals has been concentrated on the areas where the general hospital is located nearby with convenient public transportations, the discordance between demand and supply appears. Excessive competition and undifferentiated medical services, and degrading of the quality of medical services thereof, have been leading to shutting down of care hospitals.
Second, we found that the supply does not meet the demand particularly in the eastern part of Seoul whereas the demand in this area has increased. As on of the most critical policies, careless decision on the hospital location might result in huge costs, environmental damages, and budget losses. Therefore this study indicates that systematic location distribution measures are required, such as the restriction of the total supply of care hospitals by region which takes the demand into consideration in order to solve the regional imbalance of space distribution of care hospitals.
