Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of expiratory muscle strength training on the swallow function in stroke patients with dysphasia.
Method: Stroke patients with swallowing disorders were randomly assigned to two groups, of 15 members. They received training for 20-minute session, five times per week, over an eight week intervention period. Their swallowing functions were eval uated through a videofluoroscopic study, and their expiratory function was assessed
by comparing improvements in maximal expiratory pressure and peak expiratory flow. Comparisons between the groups before and after interventions employed the Chi-squared test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon’s signed-ranks test. The statistical significance levels for all data were set at p<.05.
Results: For both groups, the intervention promoted swallowing and expiratory function. In the comparison between groups it showed no significant difference after intervention, except aspiration, vallecular residue, maximal expiratory pressure and peak expiratory flow.
Conclusion: Expiratory muscle strength training helps with swallowing and expiratory function. In addition, eligibility was found to have a stronger effect than resistance training, by 10 % to 75 %
