In modern times, men’s makeup and hairstyles have become more feminine. Under these trends, this study analyzed men’s makeup and hairstyles during the Baroque and Rococo periods when men’s adornment culture was at its peak. 100 men’s portraits from that time were selected. According to analysis of men’s cosmetology culture, short hair and long mustaches were popular because of Renaissance era dress which existed in the early Baroque era. In addition, there was almost no lip makeup because of the mustache. Entering the mid Baroque period, hair became longer while mustaches got shorter. As a result, cheek and lip makeup became more
common. In the late Baroque period, hairpieces became very popular, and mustaches disappeared. At the same time, lip makeup got darker. Entering the Rococo era, men’s makeup became gaudier, and more diverse hairstyles appeared. This study comparatively analyzed men’s makeup and hairstyles during the two different eras and found that their cosmetology culture has changed according to socio-cultural background at that time.
