영문 초록

This study aimed at comparing and contrasting the illocutionary forces of imperative sentences in both Korean and Arabic. Data was obtained from a discourse completion task designed for eliciting the Arabic data from Arab students and two Arabic plays, and the Korean data from Korean drama (hotelier). Findings showed that both Korean and Arabic imperative sentences share many illocutionary forces. However, it was found out that the Korean language had a higher frequency usage of certain functions (such as requesting) than Arabic, which made more use of ordering. Moreover, it was found out that the Korean data reflected a higher frequency, and a more developed system of honorifics within the imperative sentences than Arabic data. Findings of the study can be useful m pedagogy, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and translation m Korean-Arabic studies. Some pedagogical implications indicate that Korean learners of Arabic must be aware of the similarities / differences of imperative sentences in both languages in order to achieve easy communication, realizing that what is socially acceptable or offensive in one language may not be the same in the other language. It is recommended to expose Korean learners of Arabic to the authentic spoken data as that used in their study, as they (learners) should be aware of the appropriate functions of the imperatives. Textbook designers and teachers should focus on the most frequent topics which call for using certain functions in everyday communication. They should also develop learners' awareness of the cultural similarities and differences between the two languages. Moreover, learners of Arabic should also be aware of some sociolinguistic variables on using imperatives i.e. topic, setting, and participants including their age, sex, status (solidarity vs. power, and intimacy vs. formality.) Finally this study reveals a need for conducting more studies on similar contrastive sociolinguistic areas of research in order to detect other cross-cultural similarities/differences between Korean and Arabic. Information about these aspects will definitely help learners of other languages a better understanding of communication.
