영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to study monetary units in the Arab World in Arabic focusing on comparison between Literary and Colloquial Arabic. Firstly phonological and syntactical points such as phonological processes from Literary Arabic and/or original foreign words into Colloquial Arabic are examined. Monetary unit terms in Arab World are derived from foreign originated words and pure Arabic words, but the former are much more than the latter. This is due to the foreign states’ influence and effect upon the Arab World. In the main denominations there are terms like dinar, riyal, dirham, pound (junayh or gineh, lira), shilling and oughiya (the last is pure Arabic word). In the sub-denominations there are terms like milliem, cent, centime, fals, baisa, halala, qirsh and khums (the last four are pure Arabic words).
