영문 초록

This paper deals with the thematic analysis on the Egyptian novelist Najib Mahfuz(1911-2006)'s work, "al-Karnak". In views of being no papers had dealt with on this novel until now in Korea in spite of a realistic novel par excellence not only in the subject but in the technique, I try to read the full text thematically. With the relatively liberal attitude of Sadat's regime towards intellectuals and dissidents, Najib Mahfuz finds a new freedom to explore the flaws of the Egyptian Revolution. al-Karnak deals preeminently with tyranny and suppression in Nasser's era, which inevitably created an atmosphere of prevalent fear and suspicion, of moral disintegration, repulsive corruption, and intellectual prostitution. As a meeting place of university students, older men, pensioners, al-Karnak, which is not a mere cafe in downtown Cairo, becomes almost a microcosm of Egyptian society and our novelist well describes his thoughts about the atmosphere of the society and people through the cafe.
