In general, we can say that the music of one country represent the life and culture of the people. And the domain of popular and folk music often provides insight into the psychological and social, cultural traits of a nation's character. It means that one can often illustrate the spirit and beliefs of the people by studying the types of songs, the styles, music related social occasions and musical traditions. Moroccan and Tunisian music is of many types; it includes Arab, Berber, classical, and popular elements. Musicians perform in concerts, in cafes, at private homes, at circumcision ceremonies, marriages, funerals, and religious processions and in accompaniment to dancing and storytelling. Classical music in the Moroccan sense is the Andalusian music of the tenth to fifteenth centuries. lt is extremely complicated in musical structure, and its lyrics are characterized by the strict use of the Andalusian dialect or classical Arabic and by the construction of verse in the style of classical poetry. Especially Moroccan and Tunisian folk songs exhibiting such traits existed in the Islamic culture and was sung and played by the people. The functions of popular and folk music may be divided into two main divisions. The first division usually refers to music attached to social occasions, which covers such celebrations whether of rejoicing or wedding. The second division comprises songs of love and covers a wide field in the everyday life of the Maghreb society. This study is aimed to illustrate characteristics of Moroccan , Tunisian songs and find the Maghreb people's way of thinking through the texts of songs by classifying motifs of songs focused on religion, and social life and gender. The Maghreb songs express happiness and sorrows and religious beliefs of the people. We can devide several categories of the Maghreb songs motives. They are religious song, lamentation, songs of joy, love-songs and songs of wedding.
