Reestablishment of Korean Hearer-Honorific System
This paper dealt with the conventional misconceptions on Hearer-honorific system and suggested a new perspective. Major points of the paper are as follow.
(1) The speaker's purpose of respect
By looking through the characteristics of hasio level(하시오체)and hake level(하게체), conclusion can be made that the diversion between a speaker and a listener isn't what settles an opposing system in the Hearer-honorific system. This opposing system is settled by the morphological procedure which realizes the purpose of respect and the degree of respect. hasio level(하시오체) and hake level(하게체) both represents the respect towards a speaker who is in a equivalent position or a lower one, and the difference between those two is revealed in the degree of respect.
(2) The characteristics of haera level(해라체) supports the norm that opposition of respect is not degrading, but non-respect.
(3) Informal style has its own realm of usage. First, the inherent realm of hae level(해체) is where either haera level(해라체) or hake level(하게체) cannot be used. Second, the realm of usage of haejo level(해요체) is where either hasipsio level(하십시오체) or hasio level(하시오체) cannot be used.
There are some cases where hae level(해체) and haejo level(해요체) are not differentiated with the honorific. Since hae level(해체) includes haera level(해라체) and hake level(하게체), and haejo level(해요체) includes hasipsio level(하십시오체) and hasio level(하시오체), this categorization is unvalid.
(4) '-ne(-네), -kumeon(-구먼), -na(-나), -eunga(-은가), -eulkka(-을까)', which were considered as hake level(하게체) ending, are in fact the ending of haera level(해라체). The reason why these are used in 'hake level(하게체)ㆍhaera level(해라체)ㆍhae level(해체)ㆍhasipsio level (하십시오체)' and written language is because these endings can make up an internal conversation. When an internal conversation is used in the talk, the speaker speaks a soliloquy on the premise that the listener is listening. The listener, under the premise that the speaker is speaking a soliloquy, hears the talk.
