This study examines the effects of Phonics and the Story-Telling on reading skills of elementary school learners of English. The subjects are two classes of sixth graders. One group, an experimental group, receives phonics-based lessons as their form of instruction. The other group, a comparison group, receives lessons based on the Story-Telling. Two research questions are posed: 1) What are the differences in the reading skills of the experimental group and the comparison group? 2) Does the level of proficiency make a difference in the rate of the improvement of reading skills? The results show some increases in the improvement of reading skill for the experimental group compared with the comparison group. Moreover, it is found that there is a difference in the improvement of reading skills in the proficiency levels.
