국문 초록

본 논문은 1975년 영국의 영화잡지 『스크린』에 발표된 독창적 논문 「시각적 쾌락과 내러티브 영화」에서 로라 멀비가 제시한 남성적 시선에 대한 이론을 되집어본다. 멀비가 수행한 라캉 정신분석의 정치화는 전투적 페미니즘의 관점에서 영화 내러티브를 독해하는 데 크게 기여한 것으로서, 영화 이론에 대한 지젝의 공헌보다 수십 년 앞선다. 본 논문은 프로이트와 라캉의 무의식 개념과 욕망 개념에 대한 멀비의 독해를 정정하면서 (특히 욕망의 경우, 그것의 '상상적' 현시가 아니라 그것의 '실재'에 입각해) 멀비가 제시한 이론의 강점과 약점을 살펴본 뒤, 욕망의 '실재' 이론을 『다크 나이트 라이즈』의 독해에 적용해본다. 결론에서 본 논문은 정신분석 이론이, 원래 멀비가 의도한 것처럼, (섹슈얼리티 일반이 아니라)여성의 섹슈얼리티를 성적 대상화로부터 해방시키는 데 있어서 '정치적 무기'로서의 힘을 간직하고 있는지의 여부를 살펴본다.

영문 초록

This article returns to Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze, which dates from her seminal essay of 1975, "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema", published in the British film journal Screen. Mulvey's politicization of Lacanian psychoanalysis in the service of a militant feminist reading of film narrative pre-dates Žižek's contributions to film theory by more than a decade. The article considers the strengths and weaknesses of Mulvey's theory, correcting her reading of Freud and Lacan on the concepts of the unconscious and on desire (the latter in its "real", as opposed to "imaginary" manifestation) and then applies a "real" theory of desire to a reading of The Dark Knight Rises. Finally the article considers whether psychoanalytic theory can, as Mulvey originally intended, retain the power of a "political weapon" in liberating feminine sexuality - as opposed to sexuality in general - from sexual objectification.
