The wAve is a witty adaptation of the famous Greek tragedies, Medea. 1. 5 generation Korean American playwright Sung Rno tries to explain the current racial conflicts of America, by transferring the basic conflict of the Medea, that is, the one between the insider and the outsider, into the undercurrent conflicts between the 'FOB' and 'the assimilated Korean American'. By illustrating "the difference within" the recent Asian American ethnic community, wAve challenges the existed Asian American racial politics, based on the"pan-Asian identity" which was also supported by the Japanese and Chinese centered Asian American theatre. "Pan-Asian American identity" has a risk to discriminate the recent Asian Immigrant ethic groups under the great racial political cause. In this essay, I will show that wAve gives a bitter criticism to the inter-ethnic discrimination, suggests that the singular Asian American racial identity be reconsidered and finally asks the audiences to imagine what the future of Asian American will be like.
