국문 초록

바빙크는 많은 부분 어거스틴과 아퀴나스의 논지를 공유하고, 적어도 도덕성과 정의를 말하는 지점에서만큼은 부분적으로 그로티우스와 비슷한 논조가운데서 자신의 전쟁관을 전개해나간다. 다시 말하면, 전통적인 인물들과 같이 바빙크도 만약 다음과 같은 조건들이 만족된다면 전쟁은 수행 될 수 있다고 보았다. 첫째, 보다 높은 원리들을 수호하기 위해서는 전쟁의 가능성을 열어두었고 (to defend “higher principles”), 둘째, 전쟁은 반드시 정의가 유지되기 위해 서만 필요하며 (to maintain “justice”), 마지막으로, 전쟁은 최후의 수단과 방법이 되어야 한다 (as a “last resort”). 이러한 정당한 전쟁의 조건들은 어거스틴이나 아퀴나스의 논지들과 유사하다. 그러나, 바빙크의 궁극적인 관심은 전통적인 정당 전쟁론을 단순히 따라가는 것이 아니라, 그만의 독특한 시각과 모티브를 가지고 전쟁을 바라봄에 있다. 바빙크가 살았던 그 당시의 역사적인 문맥 속에서 제대로 이해되어질 수 있는“창조계로의 참여”라는 모티브가 바로 그것이다. 이 모티브를 통해서, 바빙크는 1차 세계대전이라는 정당치 못한 전쟁에 기독교인들이 참여해야 하는가 아닌가라는 질문에 대한 바른 대답을 주기를 원했다. 즉, 1차 세계대전의 포화 속에서 “창조계로의 참여”라는 모티브를 통해서 바빙크는 전쟁에 대한 사변적인 관점을 배제하고 보다 더 실천적이고 실제적인 관점을 주고자 노력했다. 바빙크의 이러한 모티브는 전통적인 전쟁에 대한 관점을 특유의 신칼빈주의적 맥락 하에서 실천적으로 독특하게 풀어나가는 열쇠이다.

영문 초록

Herman Bavinck deals with war in the Christian tradition in a similar vein of Augustine, Aquinas, and Grotius. In other words, as they do, Bavinck also holds that war may be waged (1) to defend “higher principles;” it must serve (2) “to maintain justice;” and one may only turn to it (3) “as a last resort.” This continuity with church tradition plays a core role in building the basic structure of Bavinck’s perspective on war. However, Bavinck’s ultimate concern is not merely to follow this traditional line that emphasizes on exploring what is a “just” or “unjust” war, but also, more importantly, to expound fully on his own principle–participating in creation–specifically reflected on the particular historical context of his days. Through the theme of “participation in creation,” Bavinck tries to give a right answer for the question of whether or not Christians should participate in the specific “unjust” war which is filled with injustice and immorality, namely, the First World War. In this sense, through this theme, a somewhat speculative perspective on war presented in the traditional line which Bavinck also shares can be crystalized into a much more practical attitude toward war. In this regard, Bavinck’s theme of “participation in creation” recreates the traditional perspective on war as the unique practical way along with his neo–Calvinistic background.
