A Population Based Study of Movement Performance: Gender Difference

Background. This study is a part of the Gerontological and Geriatric Population Studies-the H70 study, Gothenburg in Sweden. This study set out to investigate weather gender differences exist in the movement performance. Methods. A kinesiological analysis of complex movement performance was carried out in two cohorts, with a computer-assisted optoelectronic camera system. Results. In 1922-born cohort (n=303), the time of movement, postural phase, locomotion phase and manual phase were significant more prolonged in female than in males but simultaneous index was not significant. In 1930-born cohort (n=274), movement time, locomotion phase and manual phase were significantly more prolonged in female than in males but postural phase and simultaneous index were not change significantly. The results in all subjects (n=577), movement time, postural phase, locomotion phase and manual phase were significantly more prolonged in female than men but simultaneous index did not change significantly. Conclusion. There are sex differences in the movement performance among 70-year old people. This indicated that in the movement performance study, it is important to separate male and female data in the determination of reference values and should not ignore.
