영문 초록

This study investigates the effects of both low self-control and opportunity factors for explaining victimization in social network services. In addition, this study tests whether the effect of low self-control on victimization is direct or its effect is mediated by opportunity factors. For opportunity factors, this study uses several explanatory factors indicating exposure and proximity to motivated offender, target attractiveness, and the absence of guardianship. Using data from 486 SNS users in Seoul, results show that low self-control has a direct positive effect on victimization. In addition, its effect is also mediated by some opportunity factors such as offense experiences in SNS and the perceived target attractiveness, which explain victimization in SNS. However, other opportunity factors such as the amount of time spent SNS and other physical and social guardianship variables have no significant effects on victimization.
