Objective: T o compare the activities of trunk muscles on the paretic side and on the non-paretic side during stroke patients' bridge exercise with different knee joint angles.
Method: Among stroke patients hospitalized in A, D, J Hospitals or those who were receiving ambulatory treatment in the hospitals, a total of 120 patients including 31 from A Hospital, 58 from D Hospital and 38 from J Hospital who had no orthopedic problem in relation to bridge exercise and could work independently with 21 points of higher MMSE scores were selected. Surface electromyography electrodes were attached to individual muscles in the trunk(rectus abdominis muscle, internal oblique abdominal muscle, external oblique abdominal muscle and erector spinae muscle) and the subjects performed bridge exercise with different knee joint angles(60°, 90°, 120°). In order to compare the muscle activity of each muscle with each other through %MVIC values for generalization, the MVIC(Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction) of each trunk muscle was obtained and the RMS (Root Mean Scare) value was obtained after the subject performed bridge exercise. The MVIC value and RMS value were obtained by calculating the mean of three values excluding the highest value and the lowest value from values obtained from five times of the exercise. Using SPSS version 18.0, general characteristics of the subjects were tested through chi-square tests and one-way ANOVAs and the measured values were compared using repeted ANOVAs..
Result : As the leg moved away from the trunk, trunk muscle activity significantly increased(p<.05).
Conclusion : During bridge exercise, performing the exercise while maintaining the leg far way from the trunk is more effective in order to enhance trunk muscle activity.
