Objective: This study used videos to determine the effects of action-observation training on upper-extremity function and activities of daily living in patients with stroke.
Method: The study included 27 stroke patients who were treated at B Hospital in Busan. They were divided into an experimental Action-Observation Training (AOT) group of 14 and a control Occupational Therapy Training (OTT) group of 13 patients. Each training type was applied for 40 minutes each time five times a week, for eight weeks. A paired t-test was used to compare the Manual Function Test (MFT), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) scores of the experimental and control groups, before and after the therapeutic intervention. In addition, ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) was conducted to compare the changes between the two groups after the intervention.
Results: After the intervention, greater improvement was seen in the MFT, MBI, and COPM scores in the experimental AOT group than in the control OTT group.
Conclusion: These results suggest that action-observation training using videos is effective for improving upper-extremity function and activities of daily living in stroke patients. Further studies of a variety of functional programs should be conducted to confirm these findings.
