Objective: Using subjective symptoms presented by physical therapists working at rehabilitation hospitals, the effectiveness of safety training and self-exercise program in preventing work-related musculoskeletal back pain
Method: A total of 125 physical therapists from three rehabilitation hospitals were asked to complete a self-assessment questionnaire on subjective symptoms of back pain. The number of respondents who felt back pain was 45(36.6%)(NIOSH criteria). these 45 were randomly assigned to two groups: the musculoskeletal disease preventative training group and the self-exercise program group. Test programs were performed for 12 weeks.
Result: In the self-exercise group, VAS score, which is a measurement of pain, significantly decreased from 4.45±0.95㎝ to 2.67±0.95㎝. In the self-exercise group, the ODI, a measurement of back function, also significantly decreased from 32.77±10.22 to 20.33±7.39. In the self-exercise group, the stability of the lumbar vertebra (LRA) significantly decreased from 7.42±2.52° to 4.47±2.04°. A change in the average, though not significant, was found in the preventative training group after the training.
Conclusion: The results showed that for physical therapists who experience work-related back pain, the self-exercise program was more effective than the preventative training program in alleviating pains as well as in improving the back function and stability of lumbar vertebra. These data are expected to be useful for health care and medical institutions in preparing programs to prevent work-related back pain among physical therapists.
