In Cloud Nine, Churchill deconstructs the notion of gender imposed by hegemonic heterosexual ideology in a ritualized style. The characters attain their sexual subjectivity through the rituals of calling out pre-patriarchal goddesses and performing autoeroticism. Their pleading of becoming-woman corresponds to what Gilles Deleuze called becomingother/woman in the process of subject-formation and their "upside down" state of "cloud nine" is associated with Victor Tuner's notion of liminality. With the creative, subversive potential of liminality, the characters have the ability to transcend all gender boundaries and perform a becoming-other. They remove themselves from oppressive cultural norms and demonstrates new directions and possibilities of gender identity. They establish an alternative home/community in line with communitas, which is an ideal community in liminality. The play emphasizes the process of transformation with openendedness rather than suggests any conclusion so that the audience can participate in a new signification. Their communitas invites the audience to seek alternative future possibilities in cooperation.
