Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gather data on pregnant women's knowledge levels regarding breast feeding and newborn feeding ability. Methods: A total of 260 pregnant women who were receiving prenatal care in K university hospital and in a registered local culture center in Daegu had been surveyed from March 5th to April 9th of 2009. The breastfeeding knowledge was measured utilizing a tool developed by Sung-Hee Kim and the knowledge on newborns' feeding ability was measured utilizing a tool developed by Creedy, Cantrill, & Cook (2008). Results: The results of the study were as follow. 1) The average breastfeeding knowledge score was 20.5 out of 32.2) There had been significant differences among the levels of breastfeeding knowledge according to the breastfeeding experience (F=4.38, p=.037), breastfeeding information (F=14.96, p<.001) and breastfeeding intention (F=8.17, p=.005). 3) The average knowledge score of newborn feeding ability was 4.6 out of 6.4) The knowledge levels of newborn feeding ability showed significant differences according to the expecting mother's employment status (F=5.50, p=.020), breastfeeding information (F=6.87, p=.009), breastfeeding intention(F=11.83, p=.001). Conclusion: There is a great need to provide health education among expecting mothers regarding enhancement of their knowledge on newborn feeding ability as well as breastfeeding benefits.
