To investigate the physiological activity of A. crenata fruit extracts, both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects were observed. The extracts showed 3 major peaks with retention times of 2.9, 3.0 and 3.3 mins in HPLC analysis, which may be predicted as bergenin and syringic acid. The extracts did not show any cytotoxicity at the concentration of 1 ㎍/㎖ for 48 h in B16 melanoma cells, but cytotoxicity was noted at 10 ㎍/㎖ for 24 h. In a cell-free system, syringic acid showed antioxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner, whereas the extracts did not. However, the extracts showed significant antioxidant activity in a cell-cultured system. On the other hand, the extracts significantly inhibited melittin-induced arachidonic acid release and β-hexosaminidase release in RBL 2H3 cells. These results suggest that Ardisia crenata fruit extracts may be useful for development as anti-inflammatory agents.
