This paper aims to develop a model of English story retelling activities and apply it to elementary school students for improving their speaking and writing competences in English. Twelve elementary school students who enrolled in an after-school advanced English program participated in this study for 12 weeks. The effects of the retelling model on students’ English speaking and writing abilities and the affective domains were fairly positive. Students’ speaking and writing competences in English improved through the application of the retelling model. Reducing the burden for expressions in English by retelling activities showed that retelling activities could improve their English competences. The retelling model also made positive contributions to affective domains including interest, confidence, and satisfaction in learning English by connecting the retelling story to their personal lives. Based on the results of the study, some suggestions were made for implementing effective retelling activities and elementary English educations including the importance of choosing relevant retelling activities considering the students’ learning styles.
