The Intercultural Competence and Language Learning of Korean EFL Teachers during Overseas Training

This study investigates the intercultural competence development of Korean teachers of English during their overseas training and the relationship between intercultural competence and language learning. In an effort to understand better to what extent the participants developed interculturally during their overseas training, qualitative data were analyzed, following Byram’s (1997) Intercultural Communicative Competence model and Bennett’s (1993) Developmental Model of Intercultrual Sensitivity. The development of participants’ intercultural competence was compared to their language development as measured by self-assessments. The results indicated the following: (1) the participants developed their intercultural competence through increased authentic contacts with local people, and (2) the higher levels of acculturation were associated with the higher scores of self-assessment of the language learning, while a denial of the host culture was associated with lower scores of self-assessment of the language learning.
