The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of process-oriented writing activities using nonfiction reading materials on elementary school students’ reading and writing abilities and their affective attitudes toward writing in English. Thirty four 6th grade students of one class participated in the process-oriented writing activities for 12 weeks. The data were collected from diverse sources such as reading and writing tests, writing products, questionnaires, interviews, learning and teaching journals. Then they were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of the study show that the process-oriented writing activities using the nonfiction reading materials had a positive effect on the students’ reading and writing abilities and it also increased students’ interest and confidence in English writing. In particular, the students’ writing skills were improved in the aspects of content, organization, the use of vocabulary and mechanics. Based on the results, suggestions for writing instructions are made.
