In this study to identify sustainable building facade design, the correlation was analyzed between the facade design and facade pollution for the main streetside commercial buildings in Daegu, Korea.
Pollution levels which was based on the pollution of finish materials, the breakage of finish materials, the pollution of finish materials joint, the pollution of an opening were analyzed with forms, materials, colors of facade. Within the scope of this study led to the following conclusions.
Viewing the facade's mass form, symmetric shape is superior to asymmetric. In facade's surface flat one is superior to unflat one against pollution. That is, the pollution is caused in the uneven spot of the building. Overall, when the building is asymmetry and has unflat surface at the same time the pollution level is on the highest rank. In horizontal-accented type, the grid's pollution level was the highest. In this, usually the opening is hollowed into the building and as the facade side is bent, the contamination is caused. On the other hand plane-accented grid gets the least pollution which is because of the abundance of unit area, specifically with glass material. Glass has a large unit area and barely effected by joint. so it is easily sustainable. As glass is the most sustainable finishing material, tile is determined to be the easiest pollutant finishing material. (The order marked) Since tile has a small unit than other materials, pollution in visual is readily seen. Plus, it is very weak to destruction. When joint, the connection of each material, gets wider, the more pollution is gotten to the building. Basically, if many finishing material has used, the building easily gets dirt. But if not, as the time is longer the building is easily contaminated. In most cases, ivory color goes with tile, panel, and stone, green or blue color usually goes with glass on the other hand. White or grey color appear to be with paint finishing. Even though it's an old building, pain is superior of repair work so it may not be highly damaged.
Synthetically when a building's mass shape is symmetric with flat surface using the smooth material with plane-accented grid, and with strong chromatic color, it gets the most superior against the pollution. And generally, the knowhow to against the contamination in joint can be the key variable to maintain the primary design of the building.
