Tongshinsa was a dispatched envoy to Japan as a minister of Chosun who was in charge of an intermediary to control the peace between Chosun and Japan.
Since early in the Chosun era, Chosun had been keeping good neighborly relations with Japan until they had Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and it brought broken off diplomatic relations with Japan. But, after the war, Tongshinsa revived again by the request of Dokugawa Makbu and it traveled on private business as 12 times during 200 years.
Among the travels during the latter part of the Chosun era, Byungja Tongshinsa in 1636, Kyemi Tongshinsa in 1643 and Eulmi Tongshinsa in 1655 had a special feature that was Nitko sightseeing. Nitko was the most famous sightseeing resort that was having Tokugawa Ieyasu’s shrine named as Toshuku and Iemisy’s shrine named as Taiyuinbo.
According to seven records; Byungjailbonilgi, Hyesarok, Dongsarok(HwangHo), Dongsarok(ChoKyung), Hyesarok, Kyemidongsailgi, Busangrok and etc., as written by traveled on private business as 3 times of Nitko, this study is focusing on the history of sightseeing and shrine in Nitko.
So that analyzes about peculiarity of tour and cultural exchange with sightseeing roads and transportations, receptions and preparation process in Chosun and Japan, Nitko as sightseeing resource and Tongshinsa’s role as culture and tourism, and studies the tour exchange between Chosun and Japan in the middle of 17C.
