영문 초록

The main purpose of this study is to measure the impacts of a major sports event on the regional community and its vicinity, particularly in the socio-cultural and economic aspects. The case in point here focuses on the city of Daejeon, Chungcheong Provinces where three soccer games were held at the Daejeon World Cup Stadium in the month of June during the 2002 World Cup. Bearing in mind the linkage of sport and tourism in recent years, this study’s main concern is to research the positive and negative effects of the games to the host communities mainly by analyzing the content of three major local newspapers’ coverage during the sport event. The findings are mixed; positive and negative. The evaluations seem to be too early to make, but the short term observations or expectations of the newspapers is quite convincing. Additional field research data such as surveys would further compliment this study.
