The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of listening by the sense group. These days the goal of English education is to improve learners’ communicative competence. The first step of communication is listening. However, there are many students who cannot understand the full meaning of listening materials especially when sentences are long. Listening by the sense group can be a good method to solve this problem. Some pauses were put between the sense groups of sentences which are used for listening activities in English classes. This process has three steps. The first step is with long pauses. The second step is with short pauses. The third step is without pauses. Students have time to think about the meaning of each thought unit
during the pauses. This can help students understand the full meaning of the listening material. In this study, using the listening by the sense group in English classes was found to be effective for improving students’ English listening comprehension ability and had a positive effect on students’ affective domains such as interest and attitude in English.
