The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of comprehension check-up using chat bubble cartoons during the presentation stage of 5th grade lessons in Elementary School. The subjects consisted of two classes, containing a total of forty-one students at an Elementary school in Chungcheongnam-do Province. The experiment group participated in comprehension check-up activities using chat bubble cartoons after Look and Listen activities in the presentation stage of the lesson while the control group did so in accordance with the English curriculum. To get the results of the study, the tests of English listening skills and questionnaires on the emotional domain were obtained for analysis. The results were as follows: the experimental group significantly improved in English listening ability as compared to the control group. As for the emotional domain, the experiment group was also notably higher than the control group in terms of their motivation for learning English, their lower anxiety in using English, and their self-esteem and learning attitude. In conclusion, the research results indicate that the students’ comprehension check-up activity using the chat bubble cartoons in the presentation stage of primary English lessons has several positive effects on the development of students’ English listening ability and their emotional domain.
