Abu al-Qasim al-Shabbi was the only western poet of the Apollo Group that practiced the Romanticism all around Arab world in 1930’s. He thought that the traditional Arabic literature, and furthermore the classicial Arabic culture was poor at the creative imagination. So he claimed to refuse the whole traditional Arabic culture and literature.
And then he tried to write his poems with his personal subjective emotions. As a result, his almost all poems thematically were romantic, but formally the more than half of his all poems were written by Qasidah the traditional Arabic form. So we can say he was on the border between Neoclassicism and Romanticism and tradition and modernity as well.
Above all, he used the Greek myths like the Venus and Prometheus, and also the myth of ‘the death and revival’, and that made a contribution to the Arabic free verse. That’s why the 1950’s free verse movement was headed by the Tammuzian poets who used the myths about the death and revival.
