영문 초록

The purpose of this essay is to trace and account for the life and times of Na Hyesuk, especially her paintings. Na Hyesuk was a modern women whose thoughts go a step ahead of her contemporaries. Na should be valued as one of the enlightened women who sowed the seeds of the feminism in Korea. Na Hyesuk, a forerunner of the first generation in modern Korean art, was not only the focus of grave concerns of people in general, but also a pioneer towards the way of modern art. In her works we can find the artistic soul of an women artist and women’s emancipation movements from the yoke of the feudalistic institutions of conventional Korean society. Na Hyesuk, as an artist, expressed in her drawings the artistic presentations of the advanced Western culture and institutions, the aspects of free love and the equal rights between men and women. And through her literature and paintings Na Hyesuk indicated the spirit of feminism in Korea for the first time by presenting the idealistic symbol of personal and independent woman who tried to find and accomplished her own tasks in the process of constant efforts.
