영문 초록

It has been known well that Gwak Jae woo was famous for his martial art including riding of horse, even though he was a traditional Confucianist during the time of Lee Dynasty. He had a thorough knowledge of strategy and tactics of military. He was concerned also deeply about a policy of rich people and of strong nation. Mr.Gwak’s scholarship included not only theory and knowledge of Confucianism but also the practical learning during the times. Therefore, at one time he proposed a reform plan for practical policy to the King Shuen-jo of Lee Dynasty. Mr. Kwak was just an ordinary person when Toyodomi-Hideyousi’s army invaded into Lee Dynasty in 1592. However, after erupting the war, he quickly organized a righteous army in the province of Kyungshang and defeated Japanese army several times with marvelous operation and tactics in place of Eue-ruyng, Jueng am jin and in area of River Nakdong. Even during the time of ceasefire, he emphasized on the need of land force in the southern provinces to defeat Japanese army, taking the victories in battles of Mountain Castles as an example. And he presented strategy of national defence and buildings of rich nation to the government, whenever he had opportunities. However, his proposals for the reform were rejected each time. Therefore, he was not in governmental services for a long time because of his disappointment to the government. It was sorry that Gwak’s excellent strategy of defence system and the policy of strengthening of nation were not realized during the war time.
