The practical scientists of the later Chosun Dynasty emphasized the strengthening of mind and heart, but considered it the cardinal point of the regimen to improve their health for longevity by means of physical exercise. For this reason, they published various books on regimen such as Yisangrok, Yiyangpyon, and Suyangchongsoyuzip, and made endeavors to preserve their health.
Toigye’s manuscript book, Whalinshimbang, was the product of the demand for health on the part of the man of nobility who had long suffered from several ailments. This book is simple but suggests a variety of ways to get in shape, and with this book as a guide he himself made every effort to preserve his health, so that he could enjoy comparably healthy longevity until 70 in spite of his native illness.
The second volume or sequel to Whalinshimbang has not been handed down to us, and most scholars agreed to admit that the sequel was a lacuna. In the view of the present writer, however, the sequel was not a lacuna but had not been transcribed from the first. This argument can be supported when we consider the following facts. Even in the first volume, some of the later parts were not transcribed at all, and since its sequel was entirely concerned about the prescription, the second volume might not be considered worthy of transcription.
