영문 초록

This paper aims to give an analysis of English gapping in an optimality-theoretic approach and attempts to show how Optimality Theory works for an analysis of gapping. A gapping construction is a complex linguistic phenomenon which needs to specify various kinds of information such as phonetic, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic information. Optimality Theory can have various kinds of constraints in one tableau which satisfies to analyse a gapping construction. We have found out earlier constraints among different works from syntactic, semantic, and functional approaches in diverse frameworks. Those constraints are modified and revised to be applied for analysing a gapping construction in Optimality Theory. Based on those constraints and ranking, we can give a succinct analysis on a variety of gapping data.
