영문 초록

This paper examines English demonymic forms referring to the countries of the world. The English nationality demonyms are classified by their morphological characteristics, mostly depending on the classes of the suffixes used to form the demonyms. For each class of demonyms, the representative examples and frequency were presented, together with its cultural and social information as well as etymological information. In addition, a limited linguistic analysis was suggested, focusing on the morpho-phonological characteristics and subcategorization regulations on the most frequently used demonym-forming suffixes, namely /-(i)an/ and /-ese/. This research aims to enhance understanding of English vocabulary and morphology, especially for those who study English as a foreign or second language.
