영문 초록

This paper explores the possibility of applying the concept of ‘Orientalism’ to the historiography of history of Korean science. Although Edward Said seems to exclude ‘pure’ science and its ‘objective’ history from the proper domain of ideologically heavily-laden concept of Orientalism, I investigate a number of historiographical characteristics of the major textbooks and a number of articles in the history of Korean science, and argue that there are Orientalistic elements in accepting the apparently innocuous image of scientific developments as autonomous intellectual activities in context-free environments. I propose somewhat different ways of writing history of Korean science, which hopefully could be materialized in the future by able researchers.
