영문 초록

Is J. S. Mill a Liberal or Utilitarian? In this paper I want to discuss about the problem of conflict and coordination of Liberalism and Utilitarianism in Mill’s moral and political philosophy. Mill himself, I think, already knew the inherent tension between two poles and tried to resolve the problem by introducing the qualitative hedonism and indirect utilitarianism. But I think that he didn’t succeed so much in that project. Anyway, if there is a consensus on the value of Mill’s moral and political writings, it is that we my turn to them for the sort of moral uplift that sustains the liberal hope.
