The experience of migration or exile has become emblematic of the fissured identities and hybridities generated by colonial dislocation. Those diasporic identities have come to represent much of the experience of ‘postcoloniality’. And the experiences of diaspora are different among the ethnic groups and by the histories that shape each group that moves.
A Gesture Life by Chang-rae Lee shows the individual experience of diasporic identity of Hata, Korean-Japanese and Japanese-American who has obsessively sought the place where he would truly belong. So he has experienced the unstable and fissured identity engendered by colonial and cultural dislocation. Throughout his colonial and cultural dislocation, he underwent an indeterminate subjectivity and failed to establish meaningful human relationships.
By remembering and compromising his painful colonial past lives with his present unstable diasporic status, he can be sure to hold his own true sell and regain his love for Sunny, his adopted daughter.
