In China, the funeral ritual, the procedure and the manner of each ceremonial event, is much diversified in area and time. It has been generally believed that before 1949 it had been performed according to the traditional rules as prescribed in prestigious ritual literatures, particularly 朱熹Chu Xi’s 家礼Jiali. However, the descriptions presented in modern Xianzhi (county historical records) indicate that the folk customs do not necessarily conform to those prescribed in Jiali. This paper focuses on three ceremonial events and discusses the historical changes of the folk customs based on the method of folklore geography(Grootaers et al. 1951). By mapping these events, we find a North-South oppositional distribution existing in China. The custom 穿寿衣chuan shouyi ‘to dress up the dead’ is prevalent all over China, but in North China it is performed preceding one’s death and the characteristic event 净面jingmian ‘to cleanse the face (of the dead)’ is performed after one’s death. In the south of the Yangtze River, these customs are scarcely found, but instead we find the custom 買水maishui ‘to buy water (for the dead)’ which is performed after one’s death and before the event chuan shouyi. Three main types of ceremonial systems, namely ‘Proto-type’, ‘Northern type’ and ‘Southern type’, are differentiated in terms of temporal order of the events under study, and an assumption is proposed that Northern and Southern types might have been developed from the ‘Proto-type’ system, which conforms to that prescribed in Jiali and is still preserved in a number of localities, due to an independent innovation which occurred in the North and the South, respectively.
