For the last two decades, recasts have been at the center of second language (L2) research. Researchers’ views on the role of recasts in L2 development remain divided. Some researchers suggest that recasts are effective in interlanguage development while others have argued that recasts are too ambiguous for learners to notice as correction to language. By reviewing research into recasts, this article analyzes and synthesizes the findings, discussing the factors limiting the contribution recasts can make to L2 development. In addition, this article discusses some of the issues surrounding recast studies, and thereby suggests some inquiries that need to be dealt with in future research.
