The purpose of this study was to look into the naturalness of high school English textbooks. For the purpose, four kinds of other reading texts were chosen; foreign publisher’s reading texts, American school textbooks, magazine articles, and exam preparation books. The five different texts were compared based on Coh-Metrix indexes, which measure text cohesion and text difficulty with a computational linguistic tool. The results from the analysis revealed that high school English textbooks had higher syntactic difficulty and lower lexical diversity than other kinds of reading texts with the similar readability level. However, cohesion and coherence were measured to be appropriate when compared with other texts. From such findings, I cautiously draw a conclusion that high school reading passages are natural at semantic and pragmatic levels but unnatural at lexical and syntactic levels. Suggestions were made to develop school textbooks with varied and rich language input through more natural reading texts.
