This study investigates the effect of vocabulary teaching using the corpus-based method on the development of controlled writing skill of 5th grade elementary school students. For the study, two fifth grade elementary school classes were chosen. They were divided into an experimental class and a control class. To verify the effect of corpus-based vocabulary instruction, one diagnostic test and two writing tests(pre, post) were implemented. Several pedagogically important findings were observed. First, there was a statistically significant difference in the improvement of the controlled writing skill between the experimental class and the control class. Second, using corpus-based vocabulary teaching had a positive influence on student’s recognition of lexical phrases. Third, this method may have the potential to fill in the gap among different levels of students. The results are expected to provide useful pedagogical suggestions to elementary school English teachers and textbook developers.
