The purpose of this study is to investigate learnability problems in the acquisition of English unaccusative constructions. Specifically, it aims to examine effects of the following two factors- verb alternation and L1 transfer on between-verb variation in overpassivization errors among English unaccusative verbs by Korean L2 learners of English. It has been reported in the literature that the above two factors produce more overpassivization errors in English unaccusative constructions made by L2 learners of English. A written elicited production task was administered to 38 Korean college students to investigate how these two factors affect the tendency to overpassivize English unaccusative sentences. The results show that the two factors have effects on creating between-verb error rate among English unaccusative verbs by Korean L2 learners of English. That is, the Korean subjects produce more passivized errors with alternating unaccusative verbs than with non-alternating verbs. They also produce more passivized errors with unaccusative verbs that have passive morphemes in their L1 (Korean) translations than with unaccusative verbs that do not have passive morphemes in their L1 translations.
