영문 초록

A local tourist information center, which has been merely for information service, needs to function as a tourist attraction and be developed into a new form in connection to local industries, etc. The present study, as a basic research for examining the possibility of introducing a new type of general local information center linked to tourist information service, local industries, etc., analyzed the tourist gathering, consumption and composition of michinoeki, which is a local tourist information center in Japan. The analysis used national statistics on tourist attractions and tourists. According to the results of the analysis, michinoeki has already been settled quantitatively as an infrastructure facility of local tourism. In addition, the tourist gathering and consumption capacity of michinoeki appears to exceed that of other tourist resources such as hot springs, ordinary tourist facilities and festivals. This suggests that michinoeki has high potential for development as a base of local tourism. On the other hand, as to the facilities and programs of michinoeki, it appears important to strengthen the functions of information service and resting in order to consume and sell food materials and products unique to the locality and to promote tourist gathering and staying. The most distinctive characteristics of michinoeki are that it can be a tourist attraction through creative ideas and operation methods without any special resource and that it can function as a base linking local industries. However, the results of this study show that, for the effective operation of its functions, michinoeki needs to have facilities and programs thoroughly based on the locality.
