International Tourists' Motivation to Phuket, Thailand after Major Disasters

Tourism industry is the fastest growing contributor to Phuket economy. Due to the promotion from both government and private sector, tourism has dominated the Phuket's economy for the past two decades (Tourism Authority of Thailand, 2005). Although it has been negatively impacted by SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), Bird Flu, Tsunami or even domestic political unrest, Phuket still has promising bright future because of its resource rich for the tourism industry which can be developed continuously. The purpose of this study is to investigate international tourists' motivations who visiting Phuket, Thailand, and to provide marketing intelligence to help improve the understanding of prospective international tourist motivation to select Phuket as a travel destination recovering from a major natural catastrophe. Specifically, this study aim to: 1) develop international tourists demographic and travel profiles, 2) identify the underlying dimensions of motivation for choosing Phuket as a travel destination, 3) determine whether statistically significant differences existed between first-time and repeat travelers. A set of thirty-three motivation items was factor-analyzed. The finding of this study found six factor groupings: "Cultural, Event and Place Exploration," "Socialization," "Relaxation," "Excitement," "Leisure and Romance," and "Escape." The results revealed that repeat travelers were less motivated than first-time travelers to explore new places, and do exciting things, whereas repeat travelers were more motivated than first-time travelers by "Socialization."
