This paper analyses the destination image of Australia by South Korean tourists through representational narratives of major Korean travel agencies in Australia (Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide). The purpose of this study is to examine the images of Australia as tourism destination represented by Korean travel agencies in Australia. This research adopted qualitative research methods.
Before gathering primary data, a pilot study was conducted through focus group interviews with 5 Korean academics which resulted in a revision of the interview questions. Primary data were collected through personal in-depth interviews with 32 Korean travel agencies in Australia. The interviews consisted of 12 open-ended questions.
The conceptualisation of Tourism Destination Images provides an alternative to the interpretation of representational frames in the academic discourse with regard to the portrayal of different tourist destinations. The initial findings show firstly, lots of Korean travellers use Internet sources. However, most powerful media is virtual media, especially TV Secondly, their motivation varies depending on the cities, for example travellers go to Sydney to explore the city and visit tourism resources, whereas they visit Brisbane to engage in outdoor activities, whereas in Adelaide they mainly visit relatives. Thirdly, Korean travellers who have past travel experiences can travel more confidently and set up their travel plan individually. Lastly, most Korean travellers' attitudes to tourism destination image vary according to age and income.
