The Sinai Peninsula is famous for precious historical and cultural sites as well as its natural beauty. During the last decades new resorts for mass tourism have been developed in this region, in particular in locations like Sharm el Sheikh and Taba. However, in less accessible areas ecotourism plays a more prominent role. Native Bedouin tribes are very much involved in various ecotourism and nature preserving activities.
In 2009, an Egyptian Power Company wanted to construct a major gas-fired power plant at the coastal town of Nuweiba, close to a protected marine area and without properly consulting the local population. Although all concerned parties agreed on the need for more electricity generation, from the very beginning the selected site was very controversial. In an unprecedented way the majority of local residents and the previously divided Bedouin tribes joined forces to fight the plant‘s proposed location. There was a widespread fear that a beachside power plant would seriously affect marine life as well as local tourism as it is the main source of income. In particular, tourism would suffer from the plant‘s visual impact and the related negative perception for the holiday destination.
Eventually, the concerned population convinced the European Investment Bank (EIB), the selected key foreign project funding institution, to withdraw its support for the project in this location. Subsequently, the Egyptian authorities dropped the plan to construct a plant at the Nuweiba site. The successful struggle of the local people opens new opportunities to develop more soft and ecologically-minded tourism in the area.
